Are you worried more about Al Qaeda or domestic terrorists disguised as God fearing citizens? All across the United States of America, through the Bible Belt and beyond, people who consider themselves religious choose to hate rather than follow the word of God. Many people aren’t religious for God, they are religious for themselves and when God’s teachings don’t match their own and they simply ignore them, or feign ignorance.

Luke 6:35-36:

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

What is the difference between an Islamic extremist who distorts the teachings of the Quran and a person from Ohio who disregards the teachings of the Bible and billows pure hatred for another man based on his race, or religious background? Human beings are selfish by nature, we want bigger houses, more money, faster cars and fancier clothes, all items we associate with a higher social standing. The selfishness of humans doesn’t stop with possessions, it carries over into religion for it becomes what God can do for them, rather than what they can do for God.

10th Commandment:

You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

You hear it from celebrities at acceptance speeches, or sports players after a big play, where thanking the Lord is the norm, rather than asking the Lord to bestow equal good fortune to others. It is always about ‘Me..Me…Me…’, because people do things to better themselves, not to better the word of God. In moments of crisis, or despair you hear people say “The Lord will show me the way”, “the Lord is looking out for me”, “The Lord would never abandon me in my time of need” because people want from God, they don’t simply want God.

If you consider yourself religious, no matter what denomination, do the world a favor and know how God wants you to live, not how God can help you live they way you want. Make no mistake, Al Qaeda and other extremists groups are a threat to our way of life, but those same extremists will be voting come November, so I hope you do as well.
